The Decorative Concrete Council, a specialty council of the American Society of Concrete Contractors recently awarded the 2013 “Best of Show” to the San Diego New Central Library! Otherwise known at the WOW! Award, this prestigious Grand Prize is juried by an independent panel of industry professionals, recognizing outstanding decorative concrete projects around the world. Morley was recognized at the fifth annual competition ceremony at the Las Vegas World of Concrete, and we couldn’t be prouder. Great work team!

Project Description: The 9-story LEED Silver-targeted project consists of a 373,000 gross sq ft structure set atop a 2-level (131,000 gsf), 250-stall below grade parking garage to house the City’s new central library and a 76,000 sq ft charter high school on levels 6 & 7. Architectural highlights include the 46 ft tall x 70 ft wide structural concrete Gravity Arch within the Library’s main lobby and a 68 ft tall x 70 ft square concrete & glass reading room enclosed within an independently supported 113 ft tall x 128 ft wide lattice steel dome structure. Highlights include a 500 person penthouse community room overlooking the downtown skyline and San Diego Bay; a Children’s Library, Teen Center, Homework Center, Adult Literacy Services Center, reader seating for 1,200 persons, 407 computer stations, 6 meeting rooms, 22 wifi-enabled study rooms, gallery & exhibition spaces, adjacent 350 seat community auditorium and café.
