UCSD Village East at Torrey Pines

UCSD Village East at Torrey Pines

Morley Construction Company provided concrete subcontracting services for Phase II of the Village East at Torrey Pines. These five cast-in-place residential buildings were built for transfer students at UC San Diego. The residences consist of a 13-story concrete residential tower with 82 apartments and four low-rise “eco-flats” that include 60 apartment units. Social interaction was a focus in the design of the common areas and was accomplished by interconnecting buildings by a common pedestrian walkway. Additionally, two steel-framed buildings house a café, market, faculty offices, and student meeting spaces. Sustainable features include a thermal solar system that heats domestic water and roof solar panels that also shade the top apartment floors. Taking advantage of coastal breezes, natural ventilation cools the residences. The project was landscaped with native vegetation and utilizes an efficient drip-irrigation system.

Approximately 15,000 cubic yards of concrete was used to complete the project. Standard type II and V cement was used in the design to provide an architectural as-cast appearance for walls, decks, and column elements. The project adhered to a critical path schedule and Morley completed the project with zero lost time incidents. Morley was contracted early and helped refine the design of the project.
