Santa Monica Big Blue Bus Facility Expansion & Access Center

Santa Monica Big Blue Bus Facility Expansion & Access Center

This design-build expansion of the existing and fully operational City of Santa Monica Municipal Bus Maintenance Facility designed by architect HOK includes a 65,000-square-foot maintenance building, a 250,000-square-foot bus parking lot, all new site utilities, and landscaping. An electrified glass art wall one city block in length was designed by Dan Courson.

The project has extensive sustainable features including a water treatment, detention, and infiltration system; solar panels; reflective roofing; recycled materials; and recycled water for irrigation. All this was accomplished while maintaining full operation of the City’s existing bus operations during construction.

The Access Center (OPCC) is a two-story, 8,800-square-foot social service facility that provides medical and counseling services. The building includes men’s and women’s shower and locker areas, in addition to a food service area, walk-in cooler, and laundry room. The exterior finish combines plaster and metal panels with a decorative steel canopy over the main entrance.
