The Space Shuttle Endeavour’s temporary home at the California Science Center is a massive steel structure, designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects (ZGF) Architects. The hall measures 70 feet tall and about 17,400 square feet in area. Built on a polished concrete slab with seismic steel bracing and steel panels, it runs six bays long and five bays wide. The bracing is extra robust so that the entire west wall could be removed during the shuttle’s arrival. The concrete slab was placed with a laser screed operation to achieve a super flat floor finish.
Morley worked closely with the Science Center and team to help finalize the design, drawings, and moving plan. The structure was built with a removable west wall to allow the shuttle to move in and out. The Endeavour, a veteran of 25 missions into orbit and back, was rolled into the building on a ramp made up of a giant plastic mat supported by compacted earth.
