Morley Construction Company provided concrete subcontracting services for the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel expansion in downtown San Diego. The expansion included the addition of a new 34-level guest tower, ballroom pavilion, pool deck, and underground tunnel connecting the existing hotel to the new guest tower. The tower, one of the largest and tallest waterfront hotels at time of construction, is a structural steel building with a cast-in-place concrete core running through the building’s total height. It provides an additional 750 guest rooms.
The hotel is supported by a mat foundation of 1,000 cubic yards of concrete. Cast-in-place concrete elevator core walls were formed using a self-climbing form system in order to reduce crane costs. All work was performed while the existing tower was in full operation, requiring extensive logistical coordination with the General Contractor and consultants.
