Morley Construction Company provided concrete subcontracting services for the Hard Rock Hotel, an anchor for San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District. The 13-story, cast-in-place hotel tower features 420 rooms and was designed to appear as two separate buildings with two distinct room types in each tower – standard rooms and one-bedroom suites. The project includes a rooftop pool, retail space, two restaurants, and two levels of subterranean parking for 230 cars.
The project showcases unique concrete design features such as a 20,000-square-foot, two-story, open-area pool deck for concerts and a finished mat slab foundation ranging from three to six feet in depth. Staging the downtown site limited the project team to double-stacked office and material storage trailers, deliveries that were meticulously planned for optimized staging, and the use of a single tower crane to service the project. Despite these challenges, Morley placed 25,000 cubic yards of concrete to complete the hotel ahead of schedule and within budget.
