Morley Construction Company provided structural concrete services for this $600 million 450-bed public hospital featuring seven levels above grade and one level below grade, each consisting of approximately 60,000 square feet. The facility uses the latest technology throughout the structure and patient rooms and provides centralized tertiary services for San Diego County.

Scope of work also included a three-story, 56,000-square-foot structural steel frame Energy Center surrounded by 30-inch tall cast-in-place concrete walls supported with 15-inch wide continuous wall footings. Isolated footings support the interior steel columns and the elevated decks consist of normal weight concrete fill on metal deck.

The fourth and largest healthcare facility worldwide to earn a LEED-HC Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council, the hospital incorporates reduced energy demand systems (solar, thermal insulation, and LED light fixtures), active chilled beams in patient rooms, rainwater utilization, waste recycling, systems utilization with energy recovery options, prefabrication of elements to minimize waste, and consideration of local materials for both landscape and construction.
